POTENTIAL HEALTH EFFECTS

ACUTE HEALTH EFFECTS

SWALLOWED

Accidental ingestion of the material may be damaging to the health of the individual. Swallowing of the liquid may cause aspiration into the lungs with the risk of chemical pneumonitis; serious consequences may result. (ICSC13733). Methylenedioxybenzene synergists cause loss of appetite, vomiting, diarrhea, inflamed bowel with bleeding, bleeding from the lung, wasting and possible central depression. Central nervous system (CNS) depression may include general discomfort, symptoms of giddiness, headache, dizziness, nausea, anaesthetic effects, slowed reaction time, slurred speech and may progress to unconsciousness. Serious poisonings may result in respiratory depression and may be fatal. Constant or exposure over long periods to mixed hydrocarbons may produce stupor with dizziness, weakness and visual disturbance, weight loss and anemia, and reduced liver and kidney function. Skin exposure may result in drying and cracking and redness of the skin. Chronic exposure to lighter hydrocarbons can cause nerve damage, peripheral neuropathy, bone marrow dysfunction and psychiatric disorders as well as damage the liver and kidneys.

EYE

There is some evidence to suggest that this material can causeeye irritation and damage in some persons. Direct eye contact with petroleum hydrocarbons can be painful, and the corneal epithelium may be temporarily damaged. Aromatic species can cause irritation and excessive tear secretion. The material may produce moderate eye irritation leading to inflammation. Repeated or prolonged exposure to irritants may produce conjunctivitis.

SKIN

Skin contact with the material may damage the health of the individual; systemic effects may result following absorption. There is some evidence to suggest that this material can cause inflammation of the skin on contact in some persons. Entry into the blood-stream, through, for example, cuts, abrasions or lesions, may produce systemic injury with harmful effects. Examine the skin prior to the use of the material and ensure that any external damage is suitably protected. Alpha-substituted synthetic pyrethroids can cause "pins and needles" of the skin with a stinging or burning sensation sometimes progressing to tingling and numbness. Tears, sensitivity to light and swelling of the eyes can occur on direct contact. Aromatic hydrocarbons may produce sensitivity and redness of the skin. They are not likely to be absorbed into the body through the skin but branched species are more likely to.

INHALED

Inhalation may produce health damage*. If inhaled, this material can irritate the throat andlungs of some persons. The material may produce respiratory tract irritation, and result in damage to the lung including reduced lung function. Inhalation of vapours may cause drowsiness and dizziness. This may be accompanied by narcosis, reduced alertness, loss of reflexes, lack of coordination and vertigo. This material, like natural pyrethrins, may cause central stimulation with nausea, vomiting, stomach upset, diarrhea, hypersensitivity, inco-ordination, tremors, muscle paralysis, convulsion, coma and respiratory failure. There may be aggressive behavior, tremor and weakness. Synthetic pyrethrins, unlike natural species, rarely cause allergic responses in humans. The above symptoms are sometimes collectively called "Type I Syndrome". Methylenedioxybenzene synergists cause loss of appetite, vomiting, diarrhea, inflamed bowel with bleeding, bleeding from the lung, wasting and possible central depression.

CHRONIC HEALTH EFFECTS

Limited evidence suggests that repeated or long-term occupational exposure may produce cumulative health effects involving organs or biochemical systems. There has been some concern that this material can cause cancer or mutations but there is not enough data to make an assessment. There is some evidence that inhaling this product is more likely to cause a sensitization reaction in some persons compared to the general population. There is limited evidence that, skin contact with this product is more likely to cause a sensitization reaction in some persons compared to the general population. There is some evidence to provide a presumption that human exposure to the material may result in impaired fertility on the basis of: some evidence in animal studies of impaired fertility in the absence of toxic effects, or evidence of impaired fertility occurring at around the same dose levels as other toxic effects but which is not a secondary non- specific consequence of other toxic effects. Chronic solvent inhalation exposures may result in nervous system impairment and liver and blood changes. [PATTYS]. Repeated application of mildly hydrotreated oils (principally paraffinic), to mouse skin, induced skin tumors; no tumors were induced with severely hydrotreated oils. One ingredient of the product has caused skin sensitization reactions, shown as localized reddening and hives, or may produce respiratory sensitization characterized by asthma- like symptoms and runny nose.
