Usually used as a prepared solution as a photographic developer.
"photographic chemical"
Harmful by inhalation.
May cause SENSITIZATION by skin contact.
Harmful: danger of serious damage to health by prolonged exposure if swallowed.
Irritating to eyes, respiratory system and skin.
Toxic to aquatic organisms, may cause long- term adverse effects in the aquatic
environment.
Although ingestion is not thought to produce harmful effects, the material may still be damaging to the health of the individual following ingestion, especially where pre- existing organ (e.g. liver, kidney) damage is evident. Present definitions of harmful or toxic substances are generally based on doses producing mortality (death) rather than those producing morbidity (disease, ill-health). Gastrointestinal tract discomfort may produce nausea and vomiting. In an occupational setting however, ingestion of insignificant quantities is not thought to be cause for concern. Considered an unlikely route of entry in commercial/industrial environments.
This material can cause eye irritation and damage in some persons. The material may produce severe irritation to the eye causing pronounced inflammation. Repeated or prolonged exposure to irritants may produce conjunctivitis.
This material can cause inflammation of the skin oncontact in some persons. Skin contact is not thought to have harmful health effects, however the material may still produce health damage following entry through wounds, lesions or abrasions. The material may cause skin irritation after prolonged or repeated exposure and may produce on contact skin redness, swelling, the production of vesicles, scaling and thickening of the skin.
If inhaled, this material can irritate the throat andlungs of some persons.
Skin contact with the material is more likely to cause a sensitization reaction in some persons compared to the general population.
Principal routes of exposure are usually by inhalation of generated dust and skin contact. One ingredient of the product has caused skin sensitization reactions, shown as localized reddening and hives, or may produce respiratory sensitization characterized by asthma- like symptoms and runny nose. The material contains a skin sensitiser and the literature contains reports of acute cases of dermatitis resulting from exposure to developing solutions containing p-methylaminophenol sulphate. Irritation caused by photographic developers are mainly found on the hands, but accidental contact may also spread to the face and scrotum/pubic regions. It has also been suggested that sulphur dioxide generated during the development process has the potential to cause upper respiratory tract irritation. Several cases of fatal poisoning following ingestion of developers have been reported. Symptoms include headache, nausea, vomiting, abdominal cramps, delirium, hallucinations, tremor, destruction of red blood cells, respiratory and cardiac problems. The toxic components of the developer have three sites of action; the central nervous system, the haemopoietic system and the blood. [NIOSHTIC]
