Harmful if swallowed.
Causes burns.
Risk of serious damage to eyes.
Accidental ingestion of the material may be harmful; animal experiments indicate that ingestion of less than 150 gram may be fatal or may produce serious damage to the health of the individual. The material can produce chemical burns within the oral cavity and gastrointestinal tract following ingestion.
The material can produce chemical burns to the eye following direct contact. Vapors or mists may be extremely irritating. If applied to the eyes, this material causes severe eye damage. If inhaled, this material can irritate the throat andlungs of some persons. The material may produce respiratory tract irritation, and result in damage to the lung including reduced lung function.
The primary route of exposure is via skin contact. Chronic human toxicosis due to copper is found only in those rare individuals who have inherited a particular pair of abnormal autosomal recessive genes and in whom, as a consequence, hepatolenticular degeneration (Wilson's disease) develops. Chronic toxicity can cause damage to the liver, central nervous system, kidney, bones and eyes. (Source: ILO Encyclopeadia) Removal of contact lenses after an eye injury should only be removed by skilled personnel. Ingestion may cause abdominal pain, vomiting and diarrhoea. Copper is an essential trace element in the body, but can be toxic in excessive exposures. Inhalation may cause coughing, sore throat and irritation of upper respiratory tract.
