ACUTE HEALTH EFFECTS

SWALLOWED

  Toxic effects may result from the accidental ingestion of the material; animal experiments indicate that ingestion of less than 40 gram may be fatal or may produce serious damage to the health of the individual.  Considered an unlikely route of entry in commercial/industrial environments.  

EYE

  This material can cause eye irritation and damage in some persons.  The material may produce severe irritation to the eye causing pronounced inflammation. Repeated or prolonged exposure to irritants may produce conjunctivitis.  

SKIN

  Skin contact with the material may produce toxic effects; systemic effectsmay result following absorption.  The material is not thought to be a skin irritant (as classified using animal models). Temporary discomfort, however, may result from prolonged dermal exposures. Good hygiene practice requires that exposure be kept to a minimum and that suitable gloves be used in an occupational setting.  Excessive use or prolonged contact may lead to defatting, dryingand irritation of sensitive skin.  Toxic effects may result from skin absorption.  Exposure limits with "skin" notation indicate that vapor and liquid may be absorbed through intact skin. Absorption by skin may readily exceed vapor inhalation exposure. Symptoms for skin absorption are the same as for inhalation. Contact with eyes and mucous membranes may also contribute to overall exposure and may also invalidate the exposure standard.  The material may cause skin irritation after prolonged or repeated exposure and may produce on contact skin redness, swelling, the production of vesicles, scaling and thickening of the skin.  

INHALED

  If inhaled, this material can irritate the throat andlungs of some persons.  Inhalation of vapor is more likely at higher than normal temperatures.  The material may produce respiratory tract irritation, and result in damage to the lung including reduced lung function.  

CHRONIC HEALTH EFFECTS

  Primary routes of exposure are by inhalation, skin contact/absorption  Exposure affects the central nervous system, optic nerves and retinae.  Inhalation of vapour at any concentration may lead to severe poisoning  similar to that encountered in instances of oral ingestion.  Skin contact may cause smarting, reddening and dermatitis. Repeated  absorption may result in heart, liver and kidney damage.  Eye contact may cause lacrination and burning sensation.  WARNING: Methanol is slowly eliminated from  the body and should be regarded  as a cumulative poison that cannot be made non-poisonous.  Ingestion may result in headache, fatigue, nausea, visual impairment or  complete blindness (may be permanent), high acidity of body fluids  (acidosis), convulsions, circulatory collapse, respiratory failure and death.
