The material can produce chemical burns within the oral cavity and gastrointestinal tract following ingestion. Considered an unlikely route of entry in commercial/industrial environments.
The material can produce chemical burns to the eye following direct contact. Vapors or mists may be extremely irritating. If applied to the eyes, this material causes severe eye damage.
The material can produce chemical burns following direct contactwith the skin.
If inhaled, this material can irritate the throat andlungs of some persons.
There has been concern that this material can cause cancer or mutations, but there is not enough data to make an assessment. Skin contact with the material is more likely to cause a sensitization reaction in some persons compared to the general population.
Principal routes of exposure are usually by eye contact skin contact. Skin contact can cause itching, burning and inflammation and repeated or prolonged contact may result in dermatitis. Inhalation of mists containing alkali carbonate may produce irritation of the nose and throat, resulting in coughing, sneezing, and difficulty breathing. Ingestion of large amounts are corrosive, resulting in burning sensation, stomach cramps, vomiting, diarrhoea and possibly circulatory collapse. Long term frequent exposure to hydroquinone vapour increases the risk of lung oedema.
